His inq. post mortem gives 24 May 1405, but he is described as dead in a signet letter of the previous 8 May: Cal. Signet Letters ed. Kirby, no. 374. of Kedleston by his w. Joan (fl.1425). m. (1) by Aug. 1411, Margaret (b. aft. 1391), da. of Sir Nicholas Montgomery† (d.1435) of Cubley, Derbys., by Joan, da. of Sir Nicholas Longford (d.1401) of Withington, Lancs., and Longford, Derbys.; In The Commons 1386-1421, ii. 718 and iii. 761, Margaret is wrongly identified as the sister of Sir Nicholas (d.1435). On chronological grounds there can be no doubt she was his da. (2) Joan, da. of Sir John Bagot† (d.c.1437) of Blithfield, Staffs. by Beatrice, da. of Sir Anketin Mallory of Kirkby Mallory, Leics.; (3) aft. Jan. 1440, CHES3/40, 18 Hen. VI, no. 6. Cecily (d.1484), da. of Randle Mainwaring (d.1456) of Peover, Cheshire, by Margery, da. of Hugh Venables of Kinderton, Cheshire; wid. of Thomas Fouleshurst*; 7s. 10da. This is the number of children depicted on his tomb: J.C. Cox, Notes on Churches Derbys. iii. 178-9. Presumably he had children by all three wives. Dist. 1430, 1439.
