s. and h. of Henry Saville (d.c.1411) by Elizabeth (d.c.1416), da. of Simon Thornhill, gdda. and h. of Sir Brian Thornhill† (d.1369) of Thornhill. Her descent is given in CP40/953, rot. 101. m. (1) by 1416, Margaret, prob. da. of Sir John Pilkington (d.1421) of Pilkington, Lancs., by Margaret, da. of Edmund Verdon (d.v.p.), gdda. and h. of Sir John Verdon†, Lord Verdon (d.1376), The peds. identify her as a da. of Sir John Pilkington: Yorks. Arch. Jnl. xxv. 6; J. Pilkington, Pilkington Fam. 47-48. The survival among the Savile archs. of a receipt issued by the putative bride’s gt.-gdfa., Lord Verdon, in 1345 supports this identification: Notts. Archs., Savile of Rufford mss, DD/SR/36/122. If it is correct, Pilkington either had two daughters named Margaret, one of whom married our MP and the other, Nicholas Griffin (d.1436) of Braybrooke (Northants.), or else our MP married Griffin’s wid. after the death of a 1st w. who was also named Margaret. The first solution is followed here. 1s. Sir John*, 3da.; Yorks. Arch. Jnl. xxv. 6. (2) 29 Oct. 1441, Christine, da. and coh. of Sir John Lancaster† (d.1434) of Rydal, Westmld., by Margaret, da. of Sir William Threlkeld† of Threlkeld, Cumb.; wid. of Sir Robert Haryngton (d.c.1440) of Farleton, Lancs.; annulled 31 July 1443.
