BRYT, William, of Reigate, Surr.

William was probably related to Stephen Bryt*, who represented Reigate in the preceding Parliament of 1427, and was a relation by marriage of the lawyer John Corve* (d.1437) who did likewise on four other occasions. Corve left him bequests of books in English, a robe and £5 in money. PCC 16 Luffenham (PROB11/3, ff. 167v-168). Described as of Reigate, William was appointed a tax collector in Surrey in September 1432. He joined Stephen Bryt and another member of their family as jurors in February 1443 at the inquisition post mortem conducted in the town on the mother of Ralph Butler, Lord Sudeley. His relationship to Robert Bryt of Reigate, named as a tax collector in 1449, has not been discovered. CFR, xvi.108; xviii.124; CIPM, xvi. no. 112.
