CORP, Walter, of Great Bedwyn, Wilts.

The family of Corp or Crop were parishioners of the church at Great Bedwyn at least by the early years of the fifteenth century. In 1409 Emma Crop was recorded as an executor of Giles Crop, and a kinsman named John was defamed as having stolen capons. Reg. John Chandler (Wilts. Rec. Soc. xxxix), no. 284. Of Walter the MP, however, little is recorded, save that by 1441 he was paying the earl of Stafford’s receiver an annual rent of 16d. for two burgages in Bedwyn, and the receivers’ accounts were still noting this item 12 years later. Add. Rolls 27679, 28005, 28006. At the time of his election to Parliament he would appear to have been a burgess proper of the borough he represented.
