In November 1435 John Aston of Somerton, Oxfordshire, was bound over in £200 at the staple of Westminster to John Danvers and his son Robert (both of whom were then sitting in Parliament). When he failed to pay on the appointed day legal action was taken against him. C241/228/144. The transaction was undoubtedly concerned with the wardship of the valuable estates of Thomas St. Cler (d.1435) and the marriages of his three daughters and coheiresses, one of whom married Aston’s son John. It was later alleged that Robert Danvers and Aston had illegally entered the estates and taken the issues for the next four years, defrauding the King of his feudal rights. E13/141, rots. 27, 27d, 28d, 35; CIPM, xxv. 532-4. Perhaps our MP had hoped to acquire the marriage of another of the co-heiresses for one of his sons.
