EVERTON, Richard, of Newhall in Thurlaston, Leics.

The only certain reference to Everton is the schedule recording his election to the Parliament of 1427, although he was probably the juror of that name who attended the inquisition post mortem held for Robert Baynard (father of Philip*) at Chippenham in October 1438. CIPM, xxv. 84. In spite of the similar surnames, it is not possible to identify Everton with the Richard Overton who was active in Bucks. in the late 14th century, or with another man of that name who attested several elections of the knights of the shire for Salop during the second and third decades of the 15th. Richard Overton of Salop was serving as one of the coroners in Salop when in Feb. 1424 the Crown ordered his removal from office because he was insufficiently qualified to exercise it. He nevertheless remained coroner until his death, which appears to have occurred in the early 1430s: CFR, xi. 196; CCR, 1422-9, p. 96; 1429-35, p. 139.
