Hering’s appointment as keeper of Newcastle’s statute merchant seal suggests that he was, like several other of the town’s MPs, a lawyer, but, if so, his practice was not an extensive one. Nor does he appear to have been an active litigant, although, while sitting in the Parliament of 1422, he was the defendant in an action of debt brought by the archdeacon of Northumberland.
