James was probably a kinsman of William James of Cromer, who in 1421 was one of his fellow feoffees of the Norfolk manor of Shipden. CP40/641, rot. 398. Following his death, Nicholas’s widow married first the Surrey landowner Roger Ellingbridge (or Elmbridge), and after his death the Staffordshire lawyer, William Hextall*. CP40/745, rot. 404. The Commons 1386-1421, iii. 486 erroneously calls Roger ‘Robert’. She proceeded to marry her daughters by her first husband to the offspring of her later ones. Isabel James became the wife of Ellingbridge’s son John *. She inherited from her father £200 for her marriage, and after her mother’s death eventually gained possession of some of her father’s property in Southwark. A brass erected to Ellingbridge in Merstham parish church referred to Isabel’s parentage, although it mistakenly described Nicholas James as a former mayor of London. Surr. Arch. Collns. iii. 11; xxvi. 38. Isabel’s sisters Anne and Joan (the latter possibly the daughter of Roger Ellingbridge rather than James) respectively married Hextall’s kinsmen Thomas* and Humphrey. Surr.
