An indication of the wealth that Northby amassed through trade is given in a petition presented to the chancellor of England by his former servant, John Cardole. Cardole claimed that in his will Northby had made a bequest of 100 marks in recognition of ‘son longe labour et service’. Two of Northby’s three executors, his son-in-law Nicholas Usflete* and the chaplain Roger Bubwith, had refused to honour the terms of the will despite having control of his goods worth some 3,000 marks.
