fa. and grandfa. leased a third of manor of Brampton from Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel; manor of Dufton, a messuage in Ormside and a messuage in Sandford, Westmld. from Henry Clifford, earl of Cumberland; and a messuage in Bishop Burton, Yorks. from the archbishop of York. They also owned a messuage in Carlisle, Cumb.C142/619/46; C7/52/66. In 1637, Burton’s fa. purchased part of manor of Hillbeck, Westmld.SP23/71, p. 647.
