The Times, 18 Feb. 1876, erroneously reported that Charles Chandos-Pole was Thornhill’s maternal grandfather, confusing the Liverpool common councillor with the gentry family of Radbourne, Derbys. Less forgivably, the Derby Mercury, 16 Feb. 1876 gave his name as ‘Charles Polk’. of Liverpool. educ. Eton; Corpus Christi, Oxf. matric. 15 Oct. 1825. m. 1828, Isabella, o. surv. da. of Philip Gell, of Hopton Court, Derbys., s.p. suc. grandfa. 26 July 1830. d. 12 Feb. 1876.
