DARCY, Sir Conyers (?1685-1758), of Aske, nr. Richmond, Yorks.

Darcy belonged to the leading Whig family in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and had obvious claims to a county seat. In 1754 he was threatened with an opposition from a group of Yorkshire gentry, headed by Rockingham, who wished to have Sir George Savile as Member for the county. Darcy, wrote William Murray to Rockingham, 24 July 1753,Rockingham mss.‘could not from age, purse and constitution have stood a poll’; but he had considerable credit in the county, and there was a general wish that he should not be disturbed. He was returned unopposed, and died 1 Dec. 1758.
