Darcy belonged to the leading Whig family in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and had obvious claims to a county seat. In 1754 he was threatened with an opposition from a group of Yorkshire gentry, headed by Rockingham, who wished to have Sir George Savile as Member for the county. Darcy, wrote William Murray to Rockingham, 24 July 1753,
