BUTLER, John (1707-66), of Warminghurst Park, nr. Steyning, Suss.

John Butler succeeded his father as Member for Sussex, and as a faithful follower of the Duke of Newcastle; and before the removal of the Pelhamites in December 1762, was billeted for £700 p.a. on the office of comptroller of the Excise.See Add. 38335, f. 51; 32950, f. 277. He voted against the peace preliminaries, 10 Dec. 1762, and appears against the Grenville Administration in every extant division list. He is not known to have spoken in the House. There are some 50 letters from him in the Newcastle papers, mostly on patronage matters or Sussex affairs—hardly one mentions general politics; and no clear picture of the man emerges.

Butler died 29 Dec. 1766.
