On 5 Dec. 1753 William Murray wrote to the Duke of Newcastle:
Lord Rockingham desires me to acquaint your Grace that last Monday everything succeeded at York beyond his expectation. There was a most numerous appearance. They deputed a committee of 12 of the principal inhabitants to desire Lord Rockingham to recommend a candidate upon the Whig interest. He named Sir J. Armytage, and the recommendation was received unanimously.
Armytage supported Newcastle in Parliament. His only recorded speech was on the Minorca inquiry, 25 Apr. 1757.
In 1758 he went as a volunteer on the expedition to St. Cas, and was killed 10 Sept.
