Notes

There is no modern chronological biography of Huskisson. His life is treated kindly and thematically in A. Brady, William Huskisson and Liberal Reform (1928, 1967) and C.R. Fay, Huskisson and his Age (1951). Biographical articles of varying reliability are included in Huskisson Speeches ed. J. Wright, 3 vols. (1831) and Huskisson Pprs. ed. L. Melville (1931). B. Hilton, Corn, Cash, Commerce (1977) offers a detailed comprehensive survey of Huskisson’s economic policy. S. Garfield, The Last Journey of William Huskisson (2002), combines biographical information with an account of the construction and opening of the Liverpool-Manchester railway.

Notes

The best modern biography is J. Belchem, ‘Orator’ Hunt: Henry Hunt and English Working Class Radicalism (1985). Hunt’s autobiography, Mems. of Henry Hunt, 3 vols. (1820-2), and R. Huish, Hist. Private and Political Life of Henry Hunt, 2 vols. (1836) are biased and unreliable. Hunt’s parliamentary career is briefly reviewed in J.W. Osborne, ‘Henry Hunt’s Career in Parliament’, Historian, xxxix (1976), 24-39.

Notes

See R.K. Huch and P.R. Zeigler, Joseph Hume: the People’s MP (1985) and V. Chancellor, The Political Life of Joseph Hume (1986). Neither is up to much. For a fresh perspective on Hume see M. Taylor, The Decline of British Radicalism (1995) and ‘Joseph Hume and the Reformation of India, 1819-33’, in Radicalism in English Political Thought, 1550-1850 ed. G. Burgess and M. Festenstein (2005).
