biography text
In September 1746 Byng was considered by Henry Pelham and the Duke of Bedford for a seat at Rochester but rejected in favour of Sir Chaloner Ogle, on whose death he was returned unopposed.
In April 1756 he was ordered to the Mediterranean to protect Gibraltar and Minorca; after the loss of Minorca he was court martialled, found guilty and recommended to mercy, but shot on the quarter deck of the Monarque in Portsmouth harbour, 14 Mar. 1757.
