Marchaunt was one of three sons of the Taunton merchant William Marchaunt. While his brother Richard followed their father into the cloth trade, the third son, Andrew, entered the Church.3 Som. Archs., Portman mss, DD\PM/5/2/10. John is last heard of in November 1430, when he headed the list of witnesses to a property deed of his neighbour Thomas Osborne.4 E326/5035.
