Early in 1420, in a striking illustration of the trivia that concerned local courts, in the mayor’s court at Carlisle Muncaster unsuccessfully claimed damages of 8d. against a saddler for the detinue of a saddle delivered to him to repair some eight years earlier. He was still alive in 1430, when Sir Peter Tilliol* sued him for a debt of four marks. Interestingly, here he is described as resident at Scaleby, Tilliol’s home a few miles to the north-east of Carlisle, and it may be that he was one of that wealthy knight’s servants.3 Cumbria RO, Carlisle, Carlisle city recs.
