The Lords Botreaux of Boscastle aside, Richard’s more important clients, for whom he acted in the Westminster law courts, also included the Arundells of Trerice, the St. Aubyns, the Nanfans, the violent Oliver Tregasowe, and Sir William Bodrugan*, who appointed him one of the attorneys charged with rendering his shrieval account at the Exchequer in 1427-8.4 CP40/596, rot. 305; 615, rot. 592; 622, rot. 361; 628, rot. 124; 635, rot. 134; 639, rot. 128; 664, rot. 478; 669, rot. 436; 689, rots. 123, 403, 403d, 447; E207/13/9; KB27/680, att. rot. 1d; 686, rot. 64. He may, indeed, have had a more permanent attachment to the Cornish shire-house, for the following April he was acting as receiver of writs in the common bench for Bodrugan’s successor, John Nanfan*.5 CP40/673, rot. 111d.

It was probably this William Richard who held property in the Arundell manor of Trembleath in north Cornwall, and he may have survived into the early years of Edward IV’s reign. He was probably succeeded there by his son (or another kinsman of the same name), who served as reeve at Ennis Caven (in St. Dennis) in 1488-9.6 Cornw. RO, Arundell mss, AR2/49; 54, m. 2; 61/1; 926. However, it is clear on chronological grounds that the namesake active in Devon from the third quarter of the fifteenth century was distinct from the MP of 1420.7 C1/54/36; 158/21; 285/47; 561/96.
