Andrew Archer, whose family had been seated at Umberslade since the reign of Henry III, was returned six times for his county, five of them without opposition. Classed at George I’s accession as a Tory who might often vote with the Whigs, he would not have been chosen to stand again for Warwickshire in 1715 but for William Bromley, who

in great compassion to his old friend Archer, would not let his son be put up in Warwickshire. He has undertaken for Mr. Archer to the gentlemen, that he shall be no more whimsical.2HMC Portland, vii, 211.

He carried out his undertaking, voting against the Government in all recorded divisions, and speaking against the septennial bill.

He died 30 Dec. 1741.
