BRIGGS, Sir Humphrey, 4th Bt. (?1670-1734), of Haughton, Salop.

Briggs, a Shropshire country gentleman, whose grandfather had represented Wenlock in 1646, was distantly related to Mary Wilbraham, the wife of the 2nd Earl of Bradford. Late in 1714 he declared that he would not be seeking a seat in the new Parliament,1Sir H. Briggs to Louis Daniel de Montcalm, seigneur de St. Véran, 25 Nov. 1714, Add. 39167, f. 122. but in 1716 was brought in for Wenlock on the Bradford interest in succession to the 2nd Earl of Bradford’s brother, Thomas Newport. He was absent from the division on the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts in 1719, was classed as ‘doubtful’ by Sunderland, ‘to be spoke to’ by Bradford, and voted against the peerage bill. He was successful in 1722, did not stand in 1727 and died 8 Dec. 1734.
