biography text
In 1751 James Colebrooke bought the manor of Gatton for £23,000, carrying with it the control of one seat at Gatton, for which he was returned as an opposition Whig. Next year he succeeded his father as head of the family banking business, becoming an important army contractor and underwriter of war loans. He died 10 May 1761.
