John Hynde Cotton was brought in as a Tory for St. Germans in 1741 by Richard Eliot.2Sir John Hynde Cotton to Rich. Eliot, 19 May 1741, Eliot mss at Port Eliot. Through his marriage he acquired the Red Lion brewery in London and was later listed in directories as a brewer of Lower East Smithfield. Defeated at Bedford in 1747, he succeeded his father, the Jacobite leader, at Marlborough in 1752 on the Bruce interest, retaining that seat in 1754, and voting against the Administration in all recorded divisions of this period. He died 23 Jan. 1795.
