After sitting for the borough of Wootton Bassett, Long, a Tory, was returned four times unopposed for his county, voting consistently against the Walpole and Pelham Administrations. The 2nd Lord Egmont, in his electoral survey, c.1749-50, describes him as ‘a weak Tory, conceited, sour, but will be for us if the rest are’. He died 10 Feb. 1767.
