Lord Robert Manners, an army officer who served in Flanders during the war of the Austrian succession, was the brother-in-law of Henry Pelham, to whose recommendation he presumably owed his return in 1747 for Hull, where he was a stranger. Appointed lieutenant-governor of Hull in 1749, he retained his seat, with the support of the Government, for 35 years. He died 31 May 1782, aged 64.
