After contesting Lancaster unsuccessfully at a by-election in 1745, he was returned for it unopposed in 1747 as a government supporter. In December 1748 it was reported that he and a friend at the Newton races were ‘stoned at ... and urged to drink the Pretender’s health, but, drew their pistols and made their way through the Jacobite mob.’1Remains of John Byrom (Chetham Soc. xliv), ii (2), p. 474.
