biography text
The son of a wealthy scrivener, William Newland inherited in 1703 from his kinsman, Thomas Turgis, M.P., the manor of Gatton, carrying control of one of the seats there. Returned for Gatton as a Tory at the first opportunity after coming of age, he voted against the Government in all recorded divisions till his death 4 May 1738.
