Pye, whose great-grandfather, Sir Robert Pye, auditor of the Exchequer under James I and Charles I, bought Faringdon in 1623, represented his county as a Tory without opposition till his death, 2 Mar. 1766, leaving his son, H.J. Pye, M.P., the poet laureate, an estate encumbered with debts amounting to £50,000.
