Rose came of an ancient Nairnshire family, who had recently acquired property in Ross-shire,1Family of Kilravock (Spalding Club, 1848), 379-427. where he was returned in 1708, but was unseated on petition, taking his seat for Nairnshire. In 1715 he unsuccessfully contested Cromartyshire. He did not stand at the next two general elections, actively supporting the candidature of his brother-in-law, Duncan Forbes, for Inverness Burghs, where he controlled Nairn.2More Culloden Pprs. iii. 88-89. Resigning his sheriffdom of Ross in 1734 to be returned unopposed for that county with the support of Forbes, he voted with the Government on the Spanish convention in 1739 and the place bill in 1740. Defeated in 1741, he stood again unsuccessfully at a by-election in 1746. During the Forty-five he entertained the Young Pretender and the Duke of Cumberland in turn. In 1747 he contemplated standing for Inverness Burghs but desisted.3See INVERNESS BURGHS.

He died in May 1755.
