biography text

Giles’s first return for Totnes was a case of popular pressure compelling the town rulers to accept an unwelcome candidate. His career lies outside the Elizabethan period. According to his inquisition post mortem, taken at Totnes 10 Sept. 1639, he died 20 Dec. 1638. Giles and his wife have monuments in the church at Dean Prior, their epitaphs written by Robert Herrick.1Roberts thesis; Vivian, Vis. Devon, 409; J. Prince, Worthies of Devon, 421-3; W. G.
