James Browne was returned unopposed for the county in 1818 in place of his ageing father, who had informed the chief secretary in January 1816 that he wished this substitution to take place, his son being ‘more fit for a movable man than his father’. He came over from the Continent to secure his election. In his first Parliament, as expected, he supported government, appearing in their majorities on the case of Wyndham Quin, 29 Mar. 1819, on Tierney’s censure motion, 18 May, and on the foreign enlistment bill, 10 June. No speech is known until January 1821, when he seconded the address. He died at Boulogne, 23 Dec. 1854.1Add. 40217, f. 89; 40274, f. 237.
