Stuart had fled abroad from his creditors in 1782 and his only means of subsistence was an allowance of about £250 a year from one of his family. In 1796, his brother Lord Bute provided him with a debtor’s refuge by returning him to Parliament on the family interest. No trace of parliamentary activity has been found and he died, intestate and heavily in debt, at Fladong’s hotel, Oxford Street, 17 May 1802, six weeks before the dissolution.2Ibid.
