The Rolts were a Bedfordshire family. Rolt’s great-grandfather Edward Rolt (d. 1616) served as recorder of Bedford, and his grandfather married a daughter of (Sir) Oliver Cromwell†, the Protector’s uncle. Rolt’s father entered the service of the East India Company in the factory at Surat, becoming chief in Persia and president of Surat before returning to England in 1682 with a large fortune out of which he purchased Sacombe Park. Returned for St. Mawes in 1713 at the recommendation of Francis Scobell*, Rolt was classed as a Tory in the Worsley list and one other comparison of the 1713 and 1715 Parliaments. His recorded contribution to the 1713 Parliament was slight, though in March and April 1714 he assisted in the management of a bill for the repair of a Wiltshire road.
