AUBYN, John, of Reigate, Surr.

Aubyn was probably the son of the John Aubyn, senior, who sat for Reigate in the Parliaments of 1377 (Jan.), 1378 and 1382 (Oct.). We do not know which of the two men was accused in July 1377 of taking part in a poaching expedition on the earl of Arundel’s Sussex estates, but it was definitely to the younger that John and Hilda Hystead convyed a messuage and a plot of land in Reigate not long afterwards. Aubyn was himself described as ‘the elder’ at the time of his last return to Parliament, so he may well have had a son of the same name. Members of his family were still living in Reigate during Henry VI’s reign, when they acquired a house next to the castle.2CPR, 1377-81, pp. 42-43; CP25(1)230/60/11; CCR, 1429-35, p. 106.
