Barbour, a barber in fact, was residing in Reading in 1377, when he paid 3s. as poll tax. His property in the town included a meadow bounded by dikes and containing a pond, and he witnessed local deeds until 1400.2Reading deeds 65, 67, 74-76, 85, 89. Barbour’s widow married John Hastyng.3Reading deed 121. It is possible that he was the father of John Barbour, bailiff of Reading in 1398, and of Nicholas Barbour, bailiff in 1414 and MP in 1427: CAD, i. A162; iv. A8539.
