BERTELOT, John (d.c.1405), of Rye, Suss.

Between 1373 and 1405 Bertelot held land in Udimore and Hope, near Rye, on which as a Portsman he claimed exemption from taxation. In April 1374 William Taillour† conveyed to him and his wife a vacant plot in Rye itself, to which he added in 1386 some 17 acres of arable land at Iden. Bertelot witnessed deeds at Rye between 1391 and April 1405. He must have died not long after the latter date, for in 1405-6 it was his heirs who paid the rent due for two market stalls in the town.2Cat. Rye Recs. 136/137, 156; Rye Corporation ms, 60/1.
