CAPPELADE, Robert, of Reading, Berks.

Although his name derives from a place in Lincolnshire, Cappelade undoubtedly lived in Reading, being assessed at 3 s. in the poll tax levied there in 1379. A saddler by trade, he became constable before July 1390, and continued as such after that date, ‘well and competently discharging the office’. It was probably during his time as constable that he served as MP, and he may have sat in his official capacity on the Reading jury which presented cases before the commission of the peace for Berkshire in June 1395.3E179/73/42; KB9/3.
