CHAMBERLAIN, Richard, of Calne, Wilts.

Richard was a member of a family which had lived at Calne from at least the 13th century.1HMC Var. iv. 100-6. In 1402 he served as a juror at the inquest held for the purpose of assessing the amount to be paid by the hundred of Calne towards the aid granted for the marriage of Blanche of Lancaster, elder daughter of Henry IV. He was among the 12 parishioners of Calne who, in October 1405, reported on the state of their church when the dean of Salisbury made his visitation; and one of the ten who did likewise in July 1412. It was on the latter occasion that he was said to owe Helmerton church 13s.4d., as a legacy of Walter Balle.2Feudal Aids, v. 219; Reg. John Chandler (Wilts. Rec. Soc. xxxix), 93, 362.
