biography text

Courthope attended the Brodhull five times between March 1436 and December 1438, representing Hastings on each occasion. In July 1441 when John Parker†, junior, was deemed insufficient for the office of Cinque Ports’ bailiff to the Yarmouth herring fair, he was one of three men nominated from whom Hastings was to choose a substitute. In 1443 he was among those who established John Salerne II’s chantry in St. Clement’s church, Hastings, in accordance with the terms of the will Salerne had made over 40 years earlier.2White and Black Bks. 7, 9, 10, 14; CPR, 1441-6, p. 197.
