biography text

Before February 1387 Crakebon and his wife Joan brought an action in the courts at Westminster for £17 18s.4d. due to Joan as executrix of Nicholas Raunce. Crakebon was active in the affairs of his home town of Maldon for several years, and in addition to service in local offices he was elected as an overseer of repairs to Hey bridge in January 1389, and chosen as an assistant to the bailiff in 1394. He was among the townsmen named in the charter of privileges granted by Bishop Braybrooke of London in October 1403. Earlier in the year he had been fined for an assault on a fellow burgess after attempting to destroy a wall encircling the plaintiff’s land and appropriate it for himself.2Ibid. ff. 5-6; Maldon custumal, f. 7v; ct. roll 1 m. 6; CCR, 1385-9, p. 307; CPR, 1401-5, p. 307.
