The Cundys of Hythe were probably related to the prominent Sandwich family of that name; for in November 1389 John gave evidence before the King’s Council with regard to the cargo of a foreign vessel captured and brought to Sandwich by Peter Cundy’s father some seven years earlier. However, there is no record of his precise relationship to Peter, who also gave evidence on that occasion, and had sat for Sandwich in the same Parliament, assembled in the previous year, in which John had represented Hythe. In 1390 John was engaged in importing wine.2PPC, i. 15; E122/126/21.
He may have been the father of another John Cundy, who held office as deputy bailiff of Hythe in 1418 and 1420.3Hythe jurats’ bk. D, f. 44; Reg. 1, f. 31; accts. box 27, f. 40.
