biography text

Roger was probably descended from the Farncombes who had been assessed for the taxes on moveables in 1296, 1327 and 1332, as living in the parishes of Patcham and West Blatchington, near Shoreham. He served on the jury which at Old Shoreham in January 1397 provided information about the local holdings of the late Thomas Buckingham, senior. In May 1401 he was among those, including the rector of Southwick and Simon Benefeld, who were commissioned by Bishop Rede of Chichester to collect and sequestrate the obventions and oblations accruing to the church of New Shoreham, pending arbitration of a dispute between Sele priory and the vicar. His knowledge about the possessions of Thomas Buckingham was again called upon in August 1403, this time as a juror at Bramber.1Suss. Rec. Soc. x. 41, 172, 287; C136/91/7; C137/34/10; Cat. Suss.
