FOWELL (FOGHELL), Richard I, of Seaford, Suss.

Richard was perhaps the son of Thomas Fowell, who had been living in Seaford in the 1360s. In accordance with a new rental, drawn up in 1393, he was to pay a rent of 6d. a year to the duchy of Lancaster, while his kinsman John Fowell (the bailiff of 1394-5 and 1399-1400) paid 12d. Richard was a member of the jury which at the view of frankpledge held in Seaford in May 1409 testified to the veracity of the then bailiff’s presentments.
