Green was an accomplice of the gang of Sussex wool smugglers led by Richard Bernard of Shoreham and Henry Eylof. In August 1393 he agreed to let Eylof and others keep their wool in his grange at Goring, on the coast, until they were ready to ship it overseas. When found out he was fined at the Exchequer, although in November 1395, following the intercession of the duke of York (to whom a moiety of his fine had been granted), he obtained a royal pardon covering all his smuggling activities over the previous ten years. Green’s lands at Goring were valued in 1412 for the purposes of taxation at £5 a year, but he himself was by then no longer in possession. He is last recorded serving as a juror at a coroner’s inquest held at Lewes in September 1417.2Feudal Aids, vi. 521; Suss. Arch. Colls. xcv. 54.
