biography text

One of the more obscure Reading MPs, Hastyng may have been an outsider brought into the town by his marriage to a local heiress, formerly the wife of Henry Barbour. He evidently lived in Reading and was active there between 1413 and 1429. He was present at the local parliamentary elections of May 1413, 1417, 1421, 1426, 1427 and 1429, but died before May 1434.2C219/11/2, 12/2, 5, 6, 13/4, 5, 14/1; Reading deeds 103, 121.

Notes

It is possible that the MP was the John Hastyng, burgess of Henley, who served as constable there in 1402, 1403, 1410 and 1411, especially as the burgess disappears from the Henley records at the same time as our John Hastyng first appears in those of Reading: Henley Recs. (Oxon. Rec. Soc. xli), 13-15, 18.
