At Easter 1384 Hethe, a barber by trade, was sued in the court of common pleas by one John Barbour of Salisbury, who accused him of house-breaking and the theft of goods worth £5. Failing to appear, he was outlawed, only to be pardoned on surrendering himself at the Fleet prison in January 1385.3CPR, 1381-5, p. 520; C88/57/63.

Hethe’s election to the Cambridge Parliament of September 1388 occurred during his term of office as mayor. During the dispute between the corporation of Salisbury and their bishop, in June 1395, he was one of the prominent citizens who represented the town before the royal council. He held land outside Salisbury, at Everley and Collingbourne Abbots.4CCR, 1392-6, p. 355; CAD, i. B1465.
