It is now impossible to be certain about the identity of this MP, although he was perhaps a kinsman of William Lee II, who also sat for Newcastle during our period. In view of their close proximity to the county border, the local burgesses may possibly have elected the Thomas Lee of Cheshire, who, in April 1423, offered sureties of 100 marks to the London merchant, John Butler II, that one Isabel Ordemer would appear to answer him in Chancery. Lee’s son, William, was himself summoned before that court in December 1431, when he was bound over in sureties totalling 500 marks to keep the peace in Cheshire.1CCR, 1422-9, p. 75; 1429-35, p. 168.
