The original return is defective through damage. The index to OR invites a possible identification with John Leighton, but this seems unlikely since Leighton’s name appears on the list of witnesses to the election. A more probable candidate is John Littlebury (or Lyttylbury), who was bailiff of Bedford in May 1419, just six weeks before the Parliament met, and who attested the indentures for the borough elections of 1420, 1422, 1423, 1425, 1432, 1433 (when he was again in office as bailiff), 1437 and 1442. He was, moreover, one of the wealthier residents of Bedford, at least on the evidence of the local lay subsidy roll for 1417.1C219/12/3, 4, 13/1-3, 14/3, 4, 15/1, 2; Beds.
