biography text
Mauncell was a qualified goldsmith, who exercised his craft in Castle Street, Salisbury. In about 1404 he was involved in a dispute with William Blake over a tenement in the city. Blake had enfeoffed him of the property as security for the repayment of a debt of £10, but following his offer of repayment, which Mauncell had refused, the latter had retained the building for eight years, drawing from it five marks a year in rent. In an effort to regain his property, Blake filed two petitions in Chancery. The outcome of the case is not known.1C1/6/131, 148. Mauncell’s connexion with Great Bedwyn has not been discovered.
