biography text

The Pernecote family was not indigenous to Reading,1No members of it are mentioned in the poll tax return of 1379; E179/73/42. but apparently originated in the Goring area of Oxfordshire, where a John Pernecote lived in the 1350s and later. Richard Pernecote, either the Reading burgess or a close relation, held property at Goring too, and in 1371 also purchased land in the nearby parishes of Compton and Aldworth, in Berkshire.2Goring Chs. (Oxon. Rec. Soc. xiii, xiv), nos. 134, 248, 260; CP25(1)12/71/14. Little is known about Richard the MP, who was established in Reading by 1386, although he certainly owned premises in the town, and witnessed deeds there between 1393 and 1413.3Reading Pub. Lib. deeds 74, 78, 80, 86, 97, 103.
